Ellen's maternal grandfather was the son of Nellie KLINE (1879-1959) and Herbert GLOVER (1879-1954); both b./d. Lockport, Niagara Co., NY. Nellie's mother Catharine K. WITMER (1851-1922) married, in 1870, Joseph KLINE (1844-1928). Both were born and died in Niagara County, NY.
Joseph was born to J. Mathias KLINE (1793-1874) and his second wife Rachael SOUTHERLAND (1803-1870). Mathias, born in New Jersey, came to Niagara County in 1811, enlisted in the War of 1812, and fought at Lundy Lane and Queenston Heights (and was wounded). He settled near present-day Lewiston and made his home in the forest, marrying (for the first time) "Squire Hewitt's daughter Nancy", with whom he had a daughter. He later remarried; Rachael Southerland, about whom we know little, was born in Canada. Mathias and Rachael had (probably) eleven children.
Mathias was the son of John Kline and Elizabeth Shipman (both born in New Jersey), and (probably) the grandson of immigrant Philipp Wilhelm Klein, born "in Bendorf in Hugenberg in 1711". More on this family will appear here as we get it sorted out -- as will photos of Mathias and Rachael!
