These wild-looking devils are Angells, the sons of James
Angell of Gridley Hollow. The one on your left is your
grandfather. In the middle Is Darwin, who inherited the
homestead and mill at Gridley Hollow and lived there all his
life. Two of his daughters you knew -- Julia and Sarah.
At Thanksgiving these Angell boys used to gather at the home
of your grandfather in Waverly and before dinner would always
have a game of football in the orchard, their heads protected
by their stove-pipe hats which they wore come hell or high
water -- or football. It made a great impression on your
Uncle Jim who remembered these occasions well.
